Becoming Established

In 1959, the Port of Nagoya was damaged by Typhoon Vera (Isewan Typhoon). Therefore, reclamation work was carried out in the western seaside zone to help prevent future disasters. In November 1971, FUJIKI KAIUN opened the Seibu Lumber Port Satellite Office. FUJIKI KAIUN’s strength was in lumber cargo handling, but in light of the trends of the times, in 1962 the company commissioned the “TOCHO MARU,” the world’s first RO/RO ship (designed to allow transported automobiles to be driven on and off under their own power). This was the first step down the path of making automobile cargo handling a pillar of the company’s business.

Period of Growth

The newly-built ship “FUJIKI” was completed in February 1978, and a presentation ceremony was held at the Port of Nagoya. The “FUJIKI” transported vehicles between Nagoya, Shiogama, and Tomakomai. It was the first ship to operate with FUJIKI KAIUN as shipowner. Previously the company had done chartering only. In February of that same year, FUJIKI KAIUN established KAGOSHIMA SENPAKU for manning the “FUJIKI” with crew. By this point, the “FUJIKI” had become the flagship for vehicle transport. The company’s lineup of ships was later expanded, e.g., with the sister ship “FUGAKU MARU” entering service in 1981.

Great Strides

On September 29, 1995, we changed our company name from FUJIKI KAIUN to FUJITRANS CORPORATION in anticipation of making new strides forward heading into the 21st century. FUJIKI KAIUN has, as assets, the history and trust cultivated by our many predecessors at the company. The new company name represents our aim to be a “creative general logistics group” that inherits the legacy of those assets— conducting business internationally and contributing to society more than ever before.
